CHAPTER ELEVEN

After a few moments of nothingness, Heather and Tiffany landed safely at the headquarters building of Holden Enterprises.

Well, mostly safely. Instead of depositing them in David Newman’s office, where they wanted to be, Heather misfired and they ended up careening into a tree in the office lobby.

“Ow, that thing has prickers on it. Who would put a pricker tree in a—”

Heather was cut off by Tiffany. “Shh…I don’t want the security people to see us. Then we’ll have to check in and have a reason for being here, and talk to my father. At that rate, Layla will be as pregnant as Carrie by the time we catch them in the act.”

Both girls were crouched down behind the huge plant, and Heather was checking her face for blood where she came in contact with its unfriendly leaves. “Okay, but I don’t know how to use this stupid power yet, and why in the hell are we hiding? Hello, what about your power?”

Tiffany bit her lower lip and suppressed a giggle as she poofed them into nonexistence—at least as far as the rest of the world was concerned.

Heather was feeling a little sick again, but surprisingly not as bad this time. She did, however, notice that Rhiannon was right. Everything about Tiffany looked a little dull after using her special gift. Luckily there were no mirrors around, and now they were holding hands and heading directly to their planned destination.

The security guards glanced around, as if they missed something, but shrugged their shoulders and went back to answering the phone and playing games on the computer monitor.

Heather and Tiffany appeared in the hallway outside of David’s office. Once again, Tiffany chastised Heather for not taking them all the way in.

“Okay, I know! It still feels weird just barging into private spaces and spying on people.”

“But crouching behind plants and listening outside doors is acceptable to you?” She rolled her pretty blue eyes, which were now a dull shade of gray. Heather hated to take any satisfaction in something that would greatly upset her friend, but she was being so obnoxious.

“Heather, I’m just saying that we are spies. No matter what. So, let’s use all of our powers to get the job done.”

Once again, they held hands and Heather transported them the short distance to the other side of the door, where David was pacing and engaged in a heated phone conversation, while Layla was perched on his guest chair, seemingly engrossed in a spreadsheet on her laptop.

“Like she’s not paying attention to this?” Tiffany pointed at Layla, and then David, who was in the middle of a rant about diapers, deadlines, and having a stroke if Carrie didn’t stop torturing him. Clearly not a conversation to be conducted in the presence of a coworker—especially not a conniving, self-centered…

Tiffany stopped herself in the middle of her own mental rant—the Love Pixies did not have all the facts, and it was presumptuous to assume that Layla was the guilty party. After all, David was the superior at work and a married father.
